Not only did I have a chance to talk to and hear many industry experts speak, like APPA President Bob Vettiere, but I got to share some ideas with actual pet store owners and service providers who are in the trenches every day! According to David Lummis, yes, and he explains why now might be a good time to expand into ecommerce. David is the senior pet market analyst for market research publisher Packaged Facts. He is also author of the monthly Market Outlook column in Pet Product News International, and a regular contributor of articles and market insight to other pet industry magazines as well as major business media including The New York Times and CNNMoney. WILL PET SERVICE BUSINESSES SURVIVE THE RECESSION? According to statistics coming out of the Petailing Leadership Conference, total pet retail sales were down 5% in 2009 from 2008 when the recession officially began. That's not to say the news was all doom and gloom. Bob Vetere, President of the APPA had some encouraging words for pet sitters, dog walkers, groomers and doggie daycare owners during these tough economic times: USING ACTIVE SELLING TECHNIQUES IN YOUR PET STORE Michael Dagne, owner of the 12-store chain, Moochie & Company, finds staff training a key aspect for growth, beginning with teaching employees about the best way of addressing customers within the store. At the recent Petailing Leadership Conference, he had this to say about “active selling” in our Video Bytes interview: HOW TO GROW YOUR PET BUSINESS WITH FACEBOOK Michael DiTullio owns a 7-store chain in the Massachusetts area and has successfully grown the company Facebook page to over 3,400 “likes,” meaning customers and potential customers who follow the pet store via social media. Having that following helps DiTullio’s “Especially For Pets” group of stores leverage their good works with animal rescues and creates a fan base that spreads his message for him.
