Pet industry lessons and unicorns: wrapping up 2021

Wow. 2021...I'm not the first to say it, but... is it over already?? Isn't it still 2020???? I've been munching on my evening bowl (or three..) of Apple Cinnamon Cheerios for 15 minutes, reflecting on the past year, and trying to put an entire 365 days into one email.... one whole trip around the sun... This time last year, I was struggling to put my business back together after COVID hit. I lost every client I had because I focused on Pet Expo exhibitor strategies. But that wasn't all - I became a first time mom at the same time. Being a new mom was tough. As most new parents do, I severely underestimated how much work a tiny human could be. And how debilitating sleep deprivation would be. I missed the excitement of working with pet business owners. I missed the pet expos. I missed working for a greater purpose with an entire industry of folks who just want to make dogs wag their cute little furry butts. The problem? I was severely lacking motivation and confidence. I also wanted to be present for my little one who ALWAYS needed me, so my time was limited to a couple hours per day at the most. I was completely stuck... like those stickers my toddler meticulously placed all over the mirror stuck. Suuuuuper stuck. I needed a way to work with pet business owners while also being a full time, present mama to my sweet little guy. Fast forward to today. I completely restructured my business and launched a brand new service that clients are LOVING. I built a team of amazingly talented experts. AND, I have TWO huge announcements coming very soon. How did I get unstuck? Well, I didn't need a sponge, soft cloth or paper towel soaked with hot, soapy water to saturate the sticker.... No, that's what you need for removing stickers from mirrors. Ask me how I know =P Here's what else I know: Action creates motivation If I wanted to get unstuck, I needed to do something. Anything. Even if it was the wrong thing. Doing something would get the ball rolling. I was right. Each action I took lead to another. And another. And another. I kept going and I haven't looked back. If at any point you're feeling stuck and unmotivated while working towards your New Year's resolution...don't give up. Rest when you need to, but take action to get the ball rolling again. You never know where it will lead you! Now what about those unicorns?!! Reflecting on the brand evaluations I did in 2021, there's one thing that really sticks out across each of them. They had a great brand story all along... they were just holding back from telling it to the world! Your brand story is what makes you YOU and sets you apart from the competition. It's what attracts raving fans and repeat customers. YOU are a huge part of your brand story - people who like to shop small want to get to know the people they support. No one else is you. Being more you in your brand makes your business a UNICORN. A company that is unique and stands out for all the right reasons. I'm 100% certain of it: If you're struggling to make your New Year's resolution happen, think about what makes you unique as a business owner...and go from there! See, unicorns are magical.
